IONL Self-Care Checklist

Thursday, April 30, 2020

Your mental health is an important part of your overall health. During this era of uncertainty, it's vital to make self-care a top priority, therefore, we've put together a list of practices you can check off each day. Learning to balance each of these areas can be a challenge, so we encourage you to try and check off as many as you can or simply get a few ideas of how to improve your mental health overall.

Physical Health

  • Focus on nutrition. As the saying goes, food is fuel. Eat a well-balanced meal to keep your body fueled.
  • Go for a walk - in nature. Try to get an adequate amount of fresh air daily.
  • Get enough sleep. Go to bed early and disconnect from your phone before you sleep.
  • Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink between six to eight glasses of water throughout the day.

Emotional Health

  • Find a support group. Connect with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling. If you need support, take advantage of the IONL Member Directory to connect with your IONL friends and colleagues.
  • Limit exposure to news. Stay up to date but set limits on how frequently you check the news.
  • Express gratitude. Try to write down three things you are thankful for each day.

Mental Health

  • Take a break. Don't overexert yourself. Pause at least hourly for three to four cleansing breaths.
  • Find an escape. Listening to music, reading a book, or watchinga new show are ways to distract yourself during these stressful times.
  • Write in a journal. Express how you are feeling each day.
  • Learn a new skill. Whether it's cooking, cleaning,or learning a new instrument, a skill is something you can use for life.
