Title: EBP Implementation Failure: Understanding Nurses' Perceptions About Using VAP Guidelines
Description: Implementing evidence into practice is complex, time consuming, and often-times results in failure. Nursing leaders must be 'armed' with evidence-based strategies ("Implementation Science") to break down barriers and facilitate the implementation of evidence-based clinical practices. Negative nurse-perceptions related to practice changes has been identified as a barrier, and should be addressed as part of any practice-change. Perceptions and attitudes are important for nursing leaders to address because there is a link between perceptions/attitudes and behaviors. This study reports on nurses' perceptions of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) prevention strategies that were used to eliminate VAP. These perceptions were then integrated into a model nursing leaders can use for the implementation of any evidence based practice change.
Objectives: 1. Describe the importance of implementing evidence based VAP prevention Guidelines 2. State 3 reasons why implementing new evidence based practices is difficult for nursing 3. Identify 2 leadership tactics that front-line nurses perceive as critical to the successful implementation of evidence based VAP prevention Guidelines
