Speaker: Dr. Nancy Spector Director, Regulatory Innovations National Council State Boards of Nursing
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) outlines the compelling argument that transition to practice programs should be implemented through regulation. Both new graduates and employers continue to express concerns about transition into practice. The American Organization of Nurse Executives' (AONE) position is that transition into practice models should not be regulated and IONL is conducting a survey of all Illinois hospitals to determine the various transition into practice models used across Illinois. NCSBN studies found that fewer than 50% of the employers reported that new graduates were prepared to practice safely and competently. In further studies NCSBN found that well-planned, post-hire transition programs had better outcomes than pre-graduation clini- cal immersion programs and were related to fewer practice errors and fewer risks for practice breakdown. In an extensive literature review NCSBN also found that post-hire transition programs were linked to fostering better practice outcomes and safer practice. Come to this session to learn more about NCSBN's model and hear preliminary results from IONL's study.
